Fitness Friday: Beating the Winter Blues

Okay…first off, I know this is now Saturday and not Friday….This week was all over the place so my apologies for a late post!

Winter Blues. I feel like we ALL get them. When you are a kid, there is all of this excitement leading up to the Holidays and then after the New Year, all the excitement is gone and you go back to school. When you are an adult, the excitement of a new toy is replaced with the excitement of cuddles, Christmas songs, and all the Christmas Cookies…so once that is over, it can be a little sad.

I’ve been seeing so many people post about having the “Winter Blues”. Simultaneously, I have been posting about it, too! It is a REAL thing and when you are experiencing it, it can be really difficult to overcome.

For this Fitness Friday post, I wanted to chat about what to do when you experience this feeling. It’s funny, at the start of the New Year, we all sit down and make a long list of goals we want to achieve this year. Most of us (10000% me) write down a ton of fitness goals. Subsequently, those Winter Blues set in and before we know it, it is the end of January and we haven’t stuck to ANY of our resolutions and we seem to be even farther away from our initial goal.

How to Tackle these Winter Blues

This might be a little controversial, but the BEST way to tackle the Winter Blues comes in 3 super easy steps…

  1. Acknowledge these “Blues” and practice self care
  2. Get a PRACTICAL plan together
  3. Pick one habit to tackle for the next 2 weeks. Just ONE.

First off, it is important to acknowledge the way you are feeling and be okay with that feeling. I am the Queen of Critiques when it comes to myself. I nit-pick EVERYTHING. Especially with wedding planning, I have this thought that I have to look PERFECT for the wedding….and looking perfect should have started last month! That added stress makes me a crazy person and is no where near helpful in actually reaching my goals.

So, what I have done for the past few weeks is acknowledge that I am slightly overwhelmed. Rome wasn’t built in a day and your goals won’t be either. To make myself feel better, I have been practicing more self care. I love using a Lush Bath Bomb and watching Sex and the City. This is something completely for ME and no one else.

After I have practiced some self-care, it’s time to reevaluate those New Year Goals. Let’s be honest; at the start of the year we are super ambitious about what we can achieve. I take a look at this list and pick 2-3 goals to actually work on and try to implement into my life. Small. Specific. Attainable. I take a look at my week ahead and PLAN for how I am going to incorporate that new habit into my daily or weekly life. That can be as simple as taking ONE new workout class, eating completely at home 3 times out of the week, whatever your gaol might be!

Lastly, try to add ONE habit for 2 weeks. For me, the easiest habit to start doing that makes a HUGE impact on your health is your water intake. For 2 weeks, I am NOT going to stress out about any other fitness related goal besides adding in water. I like to make it a game to see how much water I can fit in a 24 hour period. This will not only help my goals, but help my mental state!

What’s one goal you can add to your weekly routine TODAY? If you think it is too simple of a goal, that’s the best place to start! This will help you kick those Winter Blues GOODBYE!
