“I have nothing to wear.”
“I’m tired of all my clothes.”
Anyone else ever struggle with the whole, I have nothing to wear in my closet syndrome? I feel like I am constantly looking at my closet and thinking I need to go shopping again. With the seasons changing, I feel like that struggle is always resurfacing. Anyone else?!
If you follow me along on Instagram and Instastories, then you have probably seen that I have been redecorating my room. With that, I have been organizing, going through clothes, and putting together donate piles. I’ve been going through my closet and really trying to only keep pieces that I know I will wear and are good quality. I’ve even discovered some items that I haven’t worn in years but I still love! Exciting!!! Haha!
As I was going through my closet, I thought of so many tips and tricks that help me curb that “I have nothing to wear” syndrome. Trust me, no one likes to go through this and no one goes through it more than me! My boyfriend can attest to this…
1. Closet De-clutter
With every change of the season, I like to go through my closet and take inventory of all the clothes I have. Take a look at every single one of your items and ask yourself a simple question; yes or no? Throw all the yes’s in a pile and the no’s in another. Then, once you have gone through your entire wardrobe, tackle the yes pile. Evaluate every item. If that means you need to try things on, try them on! Once you are done with an item, hang it back up so you know you’ve already looked at it. Once you are done with the yes pile, it’s time to tackle the no pile. This one is ALWAYS so hard for me. Take a good and honest look at your no pile. Will you wear this soon? When was the last time you wore this item? If you haven’t worn it in over a year but you just can’t seem to let it go, ask yourself WHY that is. Is it because you forgot about it or because it is cute…but you can’t decide when to wear it? If you just like the item but you don’t see yourself wearing it, it’s time to give it to someone who will!
2. Rotate Those Hangers!
This tip applies more for throughout the year. A great way to see if you wear an item or not within the season/year is once you wear and wash your item, put the hanger on “backwards”. So, if all of your hangers are facing towards you, have the items that you have worn face away from you. This will make you more aware of the items that you wear constantly, versus the items that you literally never touch. Make it a challenge to yourself to wear an item that you haven’t turned over. If you try to wear it but it just doesn’t feel like you or feel right, that is a sign that it needs to go into the no pile! Don’t be a Pack Rat!! (I’m so guilty of this..)
3. Go for Timeless
When it comes to building your dream wardrobe, it is so important to go for a more timeless closet. In order to build this staple wardrobe, look for good quality basics that will last you years. A few items would include a black dress, white dress, basic v-neck tees, 2 pairs of GOOD jeans, a pair of denim shorts, a cardigan, blazer, and a warm jacket. Once you have all of these items, then you can start adding in more color, trendy, or unique pieces. Remember, you can’t build a house without the foundation!!!
4. Trendy! But is it YOU?
We all fall into those trendy traps. Leather Jackets are SO in, so you grab one for yourself? But…after 5 months and you haven’t worn it yet, you start to wonder why you bought it. Just gotta wait for the right occasion!! Unfortunately, 9 times out of 10, that perfect occasion will never happen. Why? Because you are not a leather jacket gal. You are trying to be a leather jacket gal but every time you put it on, you take it right off because it just doesn’t feel right. I am a BIG advocate for trendy items. HELLO, that is a big part of fashion. Whether it is high-street or fast, fashion truly lives and thrives off trends. However, trends don’t have to dictate your personal style. Incorporating trends is a fun way add to your wardrobe without altering your style and personality.
Example time. My twin sister and I have VERY different styles. She is very edgy and cool. Her style is a mix of comfort and menswear..hah! She wears either a leather or denim jacket almost daily. She knows how to rock camo and distressed jeans like no one else. So, naturally, I see her outfits and get inspired. I wanna have that outfit too! So, I’ll go raid her closet and borrow her favorite oversized denim jacket. I try to make it work with everything I own, but after 10 different dress combos, skinny and boyfriend jeans, I come to the conclusion that I just can’t rock the oversized boyfriend jacket like she does. Does it look bad on me? No, we are twins!! But it is just not my style. No matter how hard I try to make this trend work on me, it’s just NOT me. And that’s okay! I’ll go rock the ruffle trend that my sister would’t dare try.
5. Still stuck? Go for BASICS.
There’s a reason these are known as the basics. There’s a reason they’re called timeless. Have you ever looked back at a picture of yourself and thought, “WHY a I wearing that?!”? Yeah…we’ve all been there. If you are in a fashion rut or just not liking anything you put on, go for a pair of dark wash denim, basic white or black top, and your favorite shoes. This outfit is perfect because you can dress it up with a pair of heels and jewelry, or dress it down with some flats and a cardigan.
