Finding Your Style
Close your eyes. What does your Dream Closet look like?
Be bold with your decision: don’t waver
Think of pieces that excite you: even if something “fits” doesn’t mean you should wear it. We are all guilty of hoarding clothes we don’t wear.
Tips for Building your Closet
Bad Deals vs Good Deals
We have all been there. You are at your favorite store and searching through the sales rack. You find this kinda cute piece in your size, look at the price tag, and realize it is 75% off! How could you pass up this amazing, once-in-a-lifestyle deal?! Before you know it, this item is making its way to the cash register, then to your car, and then straight to your closet. Unfortunately, that’s as far as the item gets.
I know it is super easy to see a deal and think, WOW, I need to have this. But sometimes, when you don’t truly like something or need something, this “good deal” turns into a bad decision. Instead of wasting that $10 on a shirt you don’t actually like just because you think you can save a buck, imagine if you saved that $10 and put it towards a shirt that not only is good quality, but something you absolutely L O V E ?! Imagine your closet.
Remember that activity we did at the first part of this post? Go back to that Dream Closet. Does this closet have any of these “bad deal” deals you thought you scored? Hopefully not…. because they just collect dust.
Ultimately, a Good Deal is something you find that is good quality (and will last you a few years..at least), a flattering silhouette for your body, and something you will wear. I know that sounds like common sense, but…I’m just speaking from experience over here….finding a TRUE good deal can be challenging…especially when we get consumed by “saving a buck”.
If you find something on sale that you absolutely LOVE, should you then buy that item? OF COURSE. I am totally about deals and sales. I almost always buy clothes with some kind of coupon code I found online..haha! But, a question I ask myself before I buy is “would this item be worth it if it wasn’t discounted?”. If the answer is YES, then go for it. You actually want this item. Haha!
Pick out an outfit beforehand
This is a habit I have been building for the past 4 weeks and wow wow wow has it changed the game in my daily style. I pick out my weekly outfits every Sunday evening. I know that might sound a little OCD, but it has helped my mornings tremendously..and every day I LOVE my outfit.
Previously, there would always be a day during the week where I was just NOT feeling my outfit. I couldn’t find a good pair of jeans, or my top was ill-fitting, etc., etc. Now that I have been planning my outfits out, I look forward to every single day!
I am a firm believer that when you feel GOOD about yourself and confident, it directly effects your work ethic and self esteem. When I love my outfit, I can’t wait to put it on and go to work. Now isn’t THAT some motivation?!
Planning out my outfits has also really helped me with finding my style. No longer am I testing out a trend without fully planning it out and completely steering away from my style. No longer am I waking up and throwing clothes around trying to find a cute outfit just to come out with an outfit that isn’t bad..but isn’t me. This has completely cured my problem!
Get Inspired
We are all inspired by something or someone. Most likely, you have a few different inspirations in your life that you pull ideas from. Finding something that inspires your wardrobe really helps give you some kind of direction when planning outfits and building a closet you adore. When you are shopping and can’t decide if you need something, you can ask yourself, “would _____ wear this?”. I know that sounds so silly, but it really helps clarify confusing situations!
For me, my style inspirations are definitely Lauren Conrad, Julianne Hough (mostly for my athleisure!), and Amber Fillerup from Barefoot Blonde. These 3 are very different, but all make up Kelly Hoover. I definitely like to jam to my own bean when it comes to fashion and fitness, but when I am stuck in a rut, I love to draw some inspiration from my faves!
Your inspiration can be a micro blogger (hey!!), a friend, a mentor, really anyone in your life that you naturally love their style. Something that seems easy for you already!
When it comes to building a closet you love, something it can be really exhausting, frustrating, and down right expensive! TRUST ME, I know all of these grievances. But, if you start now and slowly build upon what you have, you will be so thankful in a few years when you wake up and just love your closet!
If you have been doing this and you STILL feel uninspired by your style, outfits, or closet, I have one more little trick for you!! Getting a clothing wrack or setting aside a place in your closet to display your favorite clothes of the month or week can REALLY help you fall in love with your clothes again. It makes you get creative with what you have, reminds you of what you have to work with, and adds a spotlight to some of your favorite things!
How would you classify your style? I would say mine is feminine, easy going, and fashion forward.
